List Price $39.95 Writer Answers and Explanations $10.00 |
Designed
to teach writing from the perspective of a writer, this textbook encourages
the love of reading and the meticulous use of the language necessary for
success in college. A comprehensive list of authors by title and time period
help make free reading more beneficial and rewarding. Separate chapters
on diction, syntax, and close reading help students develop a better command
of the language. A section on the the forty-minute essay includes some
writing samples from several different genres. A major emphasis of
this textbook is teaching rhetorical skills necessary for evaluating and
writing all kinds of argument, something that is being more and more emphasized
for the AP Language and Composition classes. Question 2 of the 2004
exam indicated this trend with an open-ended prompt that asked the students
to pick a controversial subject, then, using appropriate evidence, write
an essay that exams both sides of the issue and propose a solution or compromise.
Checklists that accompany each of the many essay questions decrease teacher
work and increase student learning. One chapter, devoted to contests designed
by students, improves reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary
retention in more creative and entertaining ways. Eight weeks of instruction
for a term paper unit asks students to select an abstract issue that affects
today's students; to survey the information available on the issue by reading
authors of works of literary merit that have an opinion on the topic; and
to develop an eventual personal stance on that issue. Also included are
three full-length multiple-choice tests typical of the English Literature
and the English Language exams.
